CORNER SMART - Turning swords into soap dishes
From government technology to beauty and innovation for consumers

In the spring 2001 David Reinfeld visited MAKE with an engineering model that demonstrated this new technology that holds things in the corner as if by magic.

"It could also drive a spring through your sternum", recalls Kevin Williams. The first models were a little dangerous. David and his team had developed this magic technology for DARPA for god only knows. David had on his staff a team of brilliant design development engineers and physicists but he needed MAKE to turn their brilliant idea into a soap dish/consumer product.

MAKE code named the project "magic shelf". And immediately dove into the project in three ways similtaneously.

We created working models that would repeat the magic without being so lethal.

We made hundreds of Ideation sketches for interface, features and form on paper.

We sampled the state of the art soap dishes & shower shelves on the market. It turned out to be a lot of suction cups, tape and hooks around the plumbing. Not a very stately art.

After that the process became a repetetive cycle of thinking of ways to fix the weaknesses, sketching out altnernative improvments, mocking-up the best solutions, testing the prototypes, evaluating the results.

This process made us keenly aware of the breakthrough beauty of this "magic" technology.

MAKE suggested to David that his product should be developed as an amazing new fixture to hold things up and an ever expanding family of snap on features. These features could be shelves in an infinite variety of forms & materials for every room in the home, shop or office. The MAKE team felt that in addition to the shelves, additional features could be baskets, cabinets or anything that would be better hanging in a corner. As we developed the product the MAKE team decided on an introductory line consisting of a bathroom suite of three co-coordinated pieces: a shelf, a soap dish, and bath basket. Megastore Home Depot began to express a lot of interest. They loved the instant grip quick technology but were luke-warm on bath accessories. They really didn't have an aisle for them at the time. Home depot asked, "How about some wood shelves for the other rooms of the house?" This is when the fixture plus feature concept really paid off. Make was able to design develop and provide factory samples, of 4 new shelves, in 10 weeks. There was a light wood shelf, an espresso wood shelf, white plastic shelf, and a beautiful shelf of black plastic, with brushed, chrome veneer. This speedy high quality response sealed the deal with Home Depot for MAKE's client. CORNER SMART tested in Manhattan July 2004 and is rolling out to the nation starting this summer. Yes factory samples.........

This would save on engineering money and development time when adding line extensions.

This strategy would proved it's presented our introductory line, a bathroom suite of three coordinated pieces. Home Depot loved the technology but was luke-warm on bath accessories as they really don't have a ailse for them. Home depot asked, "How about some wood shelves for the other rooms of the house?"

We were able to design develop and provide factory samples of 4 new shelves in 10 weeks. There was a light wood shelf, an expresso wood shelf, white plastic shelf, and a beautiful shelf of black plastic with brushed chrome veneer. When they saw these it sealed the deal with Home Depot for David.

Yes factory samples in weeks MAKE has developed relationship with many high quality vendors and technicians, and fabricators both here in the NY area and overseas.
